Renting a Car in Salalah as a Tourist: The Complete Guide (Licence, Rules, Prices & Booking)

rental nissan rogue in salalah

Most people who land at Salalah Airport have never driven in the Middle East before. So the questions we get on WhatsApp every single day are the same ones you probably have right now: Will my licence work? Do I need a credit card? How much does it cost? Is driving in Oman difficult? What about insurance?

We run a local car rental company here in Salalah, and this is the guide we wish every visitor could read before they arrive. No sales talk — just how renting a car in Salalah actually works, what you need, what it costs, and the handful of things that catch first-timers out.

Do you really need a car in Salalah?

Short answer: yes, if you want to see anything beyond your hotel.

Salalah’s sights are spread across a huge area. Mughsail Beach is 45 km west of the city. Wadi Darbat is 45 km east. Jabal Samhan is 80 km. There’s no public transport to any of them, taxis charge a lot for long distances, and organised excursions run on a fixed timetable with a busload of other people. With your own car you leave when you want, stay as long as you like, and stop at every viewpoint that deserves it.

Oman is also an easy country to drive in. The roads are new, wide and well signed in English; traffic is calm compared to almost any European city; and fuel is cheap. Most of our visitors from Europe tell us on return that the driving was the easiest part of the holiday.

We’ve written a full comparison here: Why renting a car in Oman beats taxis or tours.

What licence do you need to rent a car in Salalah?

For a short-term tourist rental, you need a valid full driving licence from your home country, held for at least one year. EU licences (Czech, Polish, German, French, Dutch, Italian and so on) are accepted, as are UK, Swiss, Russian and most other national licences with Latin characters.

International Driving Permit (IDP): an IDP is not something we insist on, but we strongly recommend you bring one. It costs a few euros at home, takes minutes to get, and it’s the document a police officer will understand instantly at a checkpoint if your licence is in Cyrillic or has no English on it. Think of it as cheap peace of mind.

Minimum age: 21.

Documents to bring on the day:

  • Your driving licence (the physical card)
  • Your passport
  • Your flight ticket or booking confirmation if you want us to meet you at the airport

That’s the whole list. Paperwork at handover takes about ten minutes.

Do you need a credit card or a deposit?

No. This is the thing that surprises most of our European customers.

The big international brands typically freeze a security deposit on a credit card — often several hundred rials — and release it days or weeks after you return the car. We don’t do that. There’s no deposit and nothing is held or frozen on your card. Instead, we do a joint photographed inspection of the car with you at pickup and again at return, so both sides have the same record of the car’s condition. Simple, transparent, and your money stays in your pocket.

You can pay in cash (Omani rials, US dollars or euros), by card, by bank transfer, or by mobile payment — whichever is easiest for you.

What does it cost to rent a car in Salalah?

Prices in Salalah are lower than most people expect, especially outside the summer khareef season. As a guide, our current rates are (as of September 2026, they change depending on the season, please contact us or checkout the home page to get the latest prices):

CarDaily rateWeekly rate
Hyundai Elantra (sedan)12 OMR80 OMR
Toyota Corolla (sedan)14 OMR90 OMR
Honda Accord (sedan)18 OMR120 OMR
Nissan Rogue (SUV)21 OMR140 OMR

So a week in a Corolla — the car that covers 90% of what most visitors want to do — is 90 OMR, roughly €200 for seven days. Split between a couple, that’s less than a single organised excursion each.

The rate includes:

  • 200 km per day, pooled across your rental. Rent for seven days and you have 1,400 km to use however you like — one quiet day, one long day, it doesn’t matter.
  • Third-party insurance, which is mandatory in Oman.
  • Free pickup and drop-off at Salalah Airport, or free delivery to your hotel anywhere in Salalah.
  • 24/7 WhatsApp support — your messages go straight to the manager & owner, not a call centre.
  • A cleaned, sanitised and inspected car.

All our cars are automatic and air-conditioned.

Staying longer than three weeks? Daily rates stop making sense. See Monthly car rental in Salalah: costs and when it beats daily rates or our long-term leasing page.

Fuel

Fuel is one of the pleasant surprises of Oman. Petrol costs a fraction of what you pay in Europe — a full tank in a Corolla is in the region of 10–12 OMR. Stations are everywhere in the city and along the main routes, and attendants fill the car for you. Cash and cards are both accepted, though small notes are handy.

You’ll get the car with fuel in it and we’ll note the level together at pickup; just return it at the same level.

A word on insurance

We’d rather be upfront about this than have you find out at the counter.

Every car on the road in Oman must carry third-party insurance, and every DriveOm rental includes it. That covers damage or injury to other people and their property. What we don’t sell is the optional “full cover” or zero-excess add-on that the big international chains charge €15–25 per day for — like most local companies in Salalah, we keep things simple and keep the daily rate low instead.

If you’d like full cover for the rental car itself, check what you already have: most European travel insurance policies and many premium credit cards include rental car excess protection, and it’s almost always cheaper than buying it at a rental desk. Bring the policy details with you, drive sensibly, and you’ll have a completely uneventful week.

Driving in Oman: the rules and tips that matter

salalah road signs

You drive on the right, the same as continental Europe. Cars are left-hand drive, so if you’re coming from the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany or France, nothing feels different.

Speed limits are 120 km/h on major highways, 100 km/h on some dual carriageways, and 40–60 km/h in the city. Watch the signs — they change often on the road to Mughsail and up into the mountains.

Speed cameras are everywhere, and they are unforgiving. This is the number one way visitors get a fine. The fixed cameras are visible, but there are also radars on the highway. Stick to the limit and you’ll never see one flash.

Seat belts are compulsory for everyone in the car. Using a phone without hands-free is a fine.

Alcohol: Oman has zero tolerance for drinking and driving. None. Don’t.

Roundabouts are common and traffic on the roundabout has right of way. Signal on exit.

Camels and goats. This isn’t a joke. On mountain roads and toward the west, camels wander onto the road and they don’t look before they cross. Slow down when you see animals near the road, especially at dusk. Hitting one is expensive and dangerous.

Driving at night outside the city isn’t recommended for first-timers — the roads are fine, but animals are harder to see.

Fog in the mountains is a summer (khareef) thing. From October to April the roads are dry and clear; read our guide to Salalah in winter if that’s when you’re coming.

Police checkpoints exist on some highways. They are routine and polite. Slow down, have your licence and passport within reach, say hello, and you’ll be through in thirty seconds.

Parking is free almost everywhere in Salalah. Park anywhere sensible; just don’t block a mosque entrance or a shop front.

  5. At the end of your trip, we meet you at the airport and take the car back — also free.

If you’re not arriving by plane, or you’d rather relax for a day first, we’ll deliver the car to your hotel anywhere in Salalah at no charge.

Which car should a tourist rent in Salalah?

For couples and small families doing the classic sights — Mughsail, Wadi Darbat, Jabal Samhan, the beaches, the UNESCO sites — a sedan is all you need. The Toyota Corolla is our most popular rental for exactly that reason: efficient, comfortable, and completely unbothered by the mountain roads.

If you like a higher driving position, want more luggage space, or plan to drive the rougher graded tracks toward Fazayah Beach, the Nissan Rogue is the SUV our foreign visitors ask for most.
